Seal: Old-School Tattoos with a Punk Rock Heartbeat
A Punk Rock Heart and a Father’s Wrath
For some, art is a quiet calling. For Seal, it was a rebellion. His journey into tattooing wasn’t born in a silent studio but forged in the raw, energetic pulse of the punk scene. Growing up in a rigid military family, he found a language that spoke to him more than tradition ever could: the bold, unapologetic honesty of an old-school tattoo.
The turning point came at 17. While studying fine arts, he was already obsessed with tattoo culture. “I went to the mall with a friend,” he recalls, “and that friend knew the owner of a tattoo shop there. So, I got the chance to go in and hang out.” A fascination quickly became a calling. He started sketching designs for the shop’s artist, absorbing the craft until he bought his first machine and turned professional.

His own first tattoo was a rite of passage. “My first tattoo was a star on my arm, inspired by Lars Frederiksen, guitarist and singer of the band Rancid,” he says. The experience was a thrill, but the real impact came later. “What really hit hard was when my dad saw it — he hit me,” Seal shares with wry honesty. That clash between the structured world he came from and the expressive world he was building is central to his story.
It was a young artist claiming his own skin, literally.
The Craft: Forging Tradition in Bold Lines and Loud Color
Seal’s love for bands like Rancid and the Misfits is inseparable from his mastery of old-school (American Traditional) tattoos. In the loud, fast, and simple chords of punk, he saw the same powerful honesty he admired in the classic tattoos of sailors and rebels.
“The bold lines and easy-to-read designs were like punk rock — simple and loud,” he explains. This philosophy is the bedrock of his work.
An old-school tattoo from Seal isn’t just a picture; it’s a piece of history, built to last a lifetime. His work is defined by the unwavering signatures of the style:
- Bold, Uncompromising Lines: Every design is built on a foundation of clean, powerful outlines that ensure the tattoo remains clear and readable for decades.
- Saturated, Classic Color: He works with a traditional, vibrant palette of reds, greens, yellows, and blacks, packed solidly into the skin to maintain their punch and longevity.
- Symbolic, Timeless Imagery: He’s a historian of his craft, understanding the deep symbolism embedded in these designs. “That style comes from sailors and has meaning,” he notes. “For example, the old-school star represents the North Star that guides navigation… If you were far from shore and saw the North Star, it meant land was near.”
This is the promise of his work: a tattoo that makes a clear, confident statement. As he puts it, “If you want something bold, you should book with me.”

The Artist’s Voice: Trust, Flow, and a Punk Rock Soundtrack
While his art is bold, Seal’s demeanor is calm and focused. He understands that getting a tattoo can be intimidating, and he prioritizes creating a relaxed environment. “I always try to make customers feel relaxed and not nervous,” he says. “I think this helps build trust and makes the experience more enjoyable.”
Step into the studio during one of his sessions, and you’ll likely hear the soundtrack to his creative process. “When tattooing, I usually play old-school punk music,” he shares. “If the client is a friend or we vibe, I’ll play bands like Rancid, Dropkick Murphys, Cock Sparrer, or Misfits.” This isn’t just background noise; it’s how he finds his flow, channeling the energy of the music into the focus of his needle.
This approach resonates with his clients, who consistently praise his professionalism and skill.

Beyond Old-School: An Artist’s Evolution
While rooted in tradition, Seal is an innovator. During the COVID lockdown, he entered an online tattoo contest with a theme of “koi fish.” Knowing most entries would be traditional, he created something entirely new: a stunning fusion of a Japanese koi with modern bio-mechanical elements. He took home first place, a testament to his unique creative vision.
His portfolio is filled with these imaginative fusions, from a goldfish in the style of the Misfits logo to a Thai black tiger shirt reimagined as a bold-lined traditional piece.
He also embraces personal challenges. He admits that fine-line work, with its delicate nature, was once a style he struggled with due to the intense pressure. “But I tried to keep improving and get better at it,” he states. This dedication to growth has paid off, earning him praise for his meticulous approach even in the styles he once found most demanding.
