More About Ya
Skills and Style
- Master in bamboo tattooing; highly skilled in color, fine line, blackwork, freehand, and dotwork.
- His work is characterized by traditional craftsmanship, controlled linework, and an understanding of how different tattooing techniques affect the final result. As a bamboo tattoo specialist, Ya preserves the traditional hand-tapping method while also working confidently with tattoo machines. His machine work includes neo-traditional designs and grey wash, while his bamboo work allows him to explore linework, fine line, and color, particularly designs that do not rely on strong color gradients.
- Ya has a particular appreciation for floral designs, tigers, and colorful tattoos featuring warm tones. For him, bamboo tattooing remains important because it preserves a traditional practice that has become increasingly rare. His experience with Sak Yant also gives him a connection to the cultural heritage of traditional Thai tattooing.
Experience & Background
“Survive, stay safe, good health, inner peace.” Ya’s journey into tattooing began when he was around 13 or 14 years old, after seeing his grandfather practice traditional bamboo tattooing. Curious, he picked it up himself and began learning, although his family initially disapproved because tattoos were associated with gangs at the time. He kept his tattooing hidden from his family, sharing the experience mainly with friends. His perspective changed when he became immersed in the tattoo culture around Khaosan Road, where meeting other artists and hearing their experiences inspired him to pursue the craft more seriously. After years of just bamboo, he began working with tattoo machines as well, building on his bamboo experience while taking on various jobs, from air-conditioning cleaning and food delivery to selling noodles and working as a motorcycle taxi driver. Over the years, Ya has developed a deep understanding of both traditional and modern tattooing, with a career shaped by hands-on experience, persistence, and a lasting appreciation for bamboo tattooing.
Artist Notes
I’m a pretty chill person, so I usually let the session happen naturally. If you feel like talking, I’m happy to chat, but I don’t normally start a conversation myself. I prefer clients who know what they want, and communicate clearly. Personally, other than Sak Yants, I enjoy working on floral tattoos, tigers, and colorful designs, and I’m happy to use my experience to help develop your ideas. I work with both bamboo and machines, and while machines are faster and easier for me, bamboo tattooing has a special place because it keeps the tradition alive. If you’re interested in bamboo or Sak Yant, I’m happy to help you understand the meaning and find an approach that suits your design.
